Identifying trees in winter workshop AND workday (run separately)

  • Bedford Fields Community Forest Garden Woodhouse Cliff Leeds, England, LS6 2HF United Kingdom (map)

Alongside our regular workday (11am - 4pm) there will be a workshop about how to identify trees in winter from 10:00am - 2:30pm. You need to book a place on this workshop. Here is all the info:

An introduction to winter tree identification: You will be given the tools to start identifying any tree in winter which loses its leaves (deciduous). You will also learn about a few commonly found evergreen trees. This course is focussed on learning how to observe trees and gather information on them systematically to come to as accurate identification as quickly as possible, rather than learning lots of individual species. You will learn though how to identify the most basic native trees - it is always good to have a few trees under your belt.

Timetable 10:00 - 2:30

Trees in winter introduction: bark, buds and catkins - You will learn the basic parts of trees and those most important for identification. How to use your senses to identify a tree.

Shape, size and structure: We will go for a wander and learn about how trees grow and how form and branching can help us in identifying a tree. We’ll start giving trees a hug too for purely identification purposes.

LUNCH - there will be lunch provided and a lunch break. YUM

Playing detective and being resourceful - how to look for important clues to help you identify the tree. We’ll do a comparison exercise to practise your detective skills.

Finish at 2:30pm

Other details

Cost is 15 - 30 pounds depending on income. This is a spectrum from unemployed/concession to part-time to full-time employment. I will however not turn anyone away so please get in touch if you can't afford this.

There are a few copies of Opal’s tree identification guides for free for the most enthusiastic. These are handy foldable, laminated guides.

You will leave with a small self-made booklet on pertinent tree identification points and a bibliography.

Lunch and refreshments are provided but with no dietary requirements in mind. Please get in touch if you have a dietary requirement.

We will be outside for a few hours and it will almost definitely be very cold so wrap up VERY well.

Please note: I would love a helper who can help me set up in the morning and pack down afterwards. You have a free place of course. You would help 30 minutes before and 30 minutes afterwards, so 9:30 to 15:00. You’ll find out if you are the helper a few days before the course.
